How To - 15 Ways to Increase Laptop Battery Life
While laptop chips have become better and better at saving power, other changes, like more powerful laptop graphics cards, faster hard drives, and Windows Vista, have erased many of those gains.
So, you'll need to take it upon yourself to improve your laptop's battery life if you really want to go the extra mile. And while that can be a confusing and tricky process, this blog post offers some helpful advice so you don't have to go it alone. Among the 15 suggestions offered at Friedbeef's Tech (hey, I didn't name it), here are the ones that will really impact your battery the most.
Add more RAM - More RAM means the computer will access the hard drive less frequently, and the hard drive uses much more power than your RAM sticks.
Dim your screen - Those big, "ultra-bright" displays really suck down the power. Dimming your screen just 20 percent can add a good chunk of time to your battery life.
Unplug external devices - Anything plugged in via USB, FireWire, or PC Card/ExpressCard draws power from your computer. Yes, even your mouse. And of course, turn off your Wi-Fi radio when you don't need it.
Minimize CD/DVD use - Optical drives are probably the worst offender on your notebook when it comes to battery use. Unless you're watching a movie, don't even leave a disc in the optical drive, as Windows loves to occasionally read it, just to check on things...
The post doesn't exactly mention it, but don't forget about the Power Options control panel in Windows, which will let you manage hard drive auto-spin-down, screen brightness, and other settings in one central location. It's a great first place to start... then check out Friedbeef's 11 other tips!

How To Lighting-Fast StartUp IE
Isn't it annoying when you want to go to a new website, or any other site but your homepage, and you have to wait for your 'home' to load? This tweak tells Internet Explorer to simply 'run', without loading any webpages. (If you use a 'blank' page, that is still a page, and slows access. Notice the 'about:blank' in the address bar. The blank html page must still be loaded..). To load IE with 'nothing' [nothing is different than blank]:
1. Right-click on any shortcut you have to IE
[You should create a shortcut out of your desktop IE icon, and delete the original icon]
2. Click Properties
3. Add ' -nohome' [with a space before the dash] after the end quotes in the Target field.
4. Click OK
Fire up IE from your modified shortcut, and be amazed by how fast you are able to use IE!
How To Speed Up Internet Explorer
Edit your link to start Internet Explorer to have -nohome after it.
For Example: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
This will load internet explorer very fast because it does not load a webpage while it is loading. If you want to go to your homepage after it is loaded, just click on the home button.
How To Disabling The 'UNSIGNED DRIVER' Dialogs Windows XP

4. Browse the folder tree to the following location:
5. User Configuration - Administrative Templates - System
6. now right-click Code signing for Device drivers and select Properties.
On the Settings tab, either select
7. enable, and then select ignore from the appearing listbox..
- or click the disable option.
8. Click apply and Ok and your set!
Alternatively especially for XP Home users:
1. Open "System" properties (Windows key + pause or Right click 'My Computer' - properties or Control Panel - System).
2. On the Hardware tab click the "Driver Signing" button.
3. In the dialogue that comes up choose "Ignore" to install the new driver anyway.

How To Change Windows XP Boot Screen
There are 2 ways to do this trick that I know about one is doing it manually and the other is using a program called bootxp. I am going to tell you the manual way to do it, but if you want to know the other way just let me know, so I can do an update to the guide. Now once you have downloaded your ntoskrnl.exe file save it a general location so that you will have easy access to it, like my folder.
Once you have ntoskrnl.exe file in an easy access folder, restart your pc into safe mode. Once into safe mode go to the folder where your files are located.
Now that you are there copy the file that you want to change your boot screen too. Once you have copied that file, hit the window key + r or type %windir%\system32 in the run command, so that folder as follows.
Once there paste your new file into the folder and overwrite the existing folder.
Now that you have your new file in the folder restart your pc as you normally would and your new boot screen should appear. You can download this bootscreen here.
ALWAYS BACKUP EVERYTHING YOU EDIT OR DELETE. I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU MESS YOUR COMPUTER UP BY DOING THIS HACK OR ANY TYPE OF HACK. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

How To - Copy Songs From Your iPod To Your PC
A reader points out a straightforward way for Windows users to transfer music from an iPod to your hard drive, without extra software:
1. Connect the iPod to your PC. If iTunes starts syncing (ie erasing) your music automatically, hit the X in the upper right hand corner of iTunes display, to the left of the search box, to stop it.
2. In Control Panel, Portable Media Devices, double-click your iPod.
3. Navigate to the Music folder.
4. Select all the music folders, and drag and drop them into a folder on your hard drive, or directly into iTunes.
And you’re done! The iPod music folder structure is strange and inexplicable, but once you move your files into iTunes you can set it to automatically organize your folder by artist and album to clean that up. (To do this, in iTunes Edit menu, choose Preferences and in the Advanced tab, check “Keep iTunes Music Folder organized.”)
If you give this a go, lemme know how it goes. I’ll amend the instructions with any additional info for other versions of Windows and iPods.
Just for the record, I did not write this article, but I would have known how to do this. But one thing I have noticed is that you do not need to go into the control panel. Instead just make explorer.exe show hidden folders. Then, navigate into the iPod directory, go into iPod_control, and follow step four of the article. Software

To help you out in generating more traffic for your site, here are some seven surefire ways to increase your traffic starting from yesterday.
1) Invest in good advertising with search engines
Google’s Adwords and Yahoo’s Overture provide great advertising schemes that are very truly popular and assures great traffic. Although with this surefire way to increase your traffic would cost some money. While some would shy away from spending money to increase traffic, it is imperative in this case to do so because Adwords and Overture is the top surefire way to increase your traffic.
You could see for yourself the success this search engine advertising methods have reaped rewards for so many companies. Lots of site feature these advertising system and many have signed on to reap the benefits. Do not be left behind. Every penny is worth it with using Google and Yahoo’s advertising.
2) Exchange or Trade Links with other sites
With exchanging links with other sites, both of you will benefit from the efforts both of you do to enhance your sites traffic. When one site features another sites link, they could provide one another with the traffic one site generates. The efforts are doubly beneficial because it would seem like both of you are working to generate more traffic. The more links traded with more sites the more traffic could be expected.
3) Use Viral Marketing
Viral marketing allows you to spread the word about your company and product without any costs or if ever low costs only. This is a marketing method that can be quite sneaky; you can attach your company’s name, product or link to a certain media such as a funny video, entertaining game, an interesting article or a gossip or buzz. With this method, people get infected with the creativity and entertainment of the medium that they will pass it on to many people.

Search engines look for certain keywords that they would show in their results page. In doing so, having the right keyword and keyword phrase is a high requirement in ranking in high in search engine results. You could write your own content or you could hire someone to do it for you.
5) Write Articles that can lead traffic to your site
Submit articles to sites that would contain the same subject that your site deals in. If you sell car parts write press releases and articles about cars and car parts. Attach your sites description and services at the end of the article as well as the link.
6) Join forums and form online communities
Capture a market and show your expertise and credibility. When you found a good foundation for your site, people will trust you and your site and will pass on to many people their trust. Traffic will certainly increase because they know that you can provide what they need.
7) Lastly, Offer newsletters.
If many people know what you are about and your existence is shared with many others, you will find a loyal traffic that can provide you with more traffic by recommendation. If you arouse the curiosity of your customers they would be pushed to help you with your traffic.
How To - Firefox Speed Tweak
Yes, firefox is already pretty damn fast but did you know that
you can tweak it and improve the speed even more?
That's the beauty of this program being open source.
Here's what you do:
In the URL bar, type “about:config” and press enter. This will bring up the configuration “menu” where you can change the parameters of Firefox.
Note that these are what I’ve found to REALLY speed up my Firefox significantly - and these settings seem to be common among everybody else as well. But these settings are optimized for broadband connections - I mean with as much concurrent requests we’re going to open up with pipelining… lol… you’d better have a big connection.
Double Click on the following settins and put in the numbers below - for the true / false booleans - they’ll change when you double click.
Code:
browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true
network.http.max-connections – 48
network.http.max-connections-per-server – 16
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server – 4
network.http.pipelining – true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests – 100
network.http.proxy.pipelining – true
network.http.request.timeout – 300
One more thing… Right-click somewhere on that screen and add a NEW -> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. Since you’re broadband - it shouldn’t have to wait.
Now you should notice you’re loading pages MUCH faster now!

Joke - Pinoy and American
A Pinoy is having his "SNACK" (bread and ube jam), when
an American man chuckling chewing gum, sits down next to him.
The Pinoy ignores the American who, nevertheless, starts a
conversation.
American: "You Filipino folks eat the whole bread??"
Pinoy (in a bad mood): "Of course."
American: (after blowing a huge bubble) "We don't. In the
States, we only eat what's inside. The crusts we collect in a
container, recycle it, transform them into croissants and export
them to the Philippines"
The American has a smirk on his face. The Pinoy listens in silence.
The American persists: "D'ya eat jelly with the bread??"
Pinoy : "Of Course."
American: (cracking his gum between his teeth and chuckling).
"We don't. In the States we eat fresh fruit for breakfast, then we
put all the peels, seeds, and left overs in containers, recycle them,
transform them into jam and export them to the Philippines ."
The Pinoy (kind of pissed of) then asks: "Do you have sex in America?"
American: "Why? Of course we do", the American says with a big smirk.
Pinoy : And what do you do with the condoms once you've used them?"
American: "We throw them away, of course."
Pinoy: "In the Philippines, we don't throw them. We put them in a
container, recycle them, melt them down into chewing gum and export
them to the States."
Joke - I'm Inlove With My Classmate
There were two friends named Jack and Diane. They had known each other since school days and had since become the best of friends. They shared everything and anything and spent lots of time together in and school. But the friendship never developed into anything deeper. Diane kept a secret--her admiration and love for Jack.
She had her reasons for keeping it a secret: fear. Fear of rejection. Fear that he might not feel the same way. Fear that he might not want to be her best friend anymore. Fear of losing someone that she could always find comfort in. At least if she kept her feelings to herself she would still be able to spend time with him, and hopefully, he would be the one to tell her how he felt towards her.
And so it came to pass that time passed quickly and soon school was over. Jack and Diane went separate ways. Jack continued his studies overseas while Diane got herself a job. They still kept in touch though: penned letters, sent each other photographs and mailed each other gifts. Diane longed for Jack to be back. She decided that she would tell him her feelings once he got back.
And then, out of the blue, the mails from Jack stopped coming. Diane wrote to him, but there was never a reply. Where was he? What happened? Lots of questions ran through her mind.
Two years passed and Diane was still hopeful that Jack would come back--or at least send her a note. And then her prayers were answered.
One mid-August day, she received a note from Jack. "Diane," it said, "I have a surprise for you. I''m flying over. Meet me at the airport. My flight comes in at 4 p.m. on Saturday. I can''t wait to see you again, Diane! There''s something I need to tell you, something I''ve been keeping all this time."
The note ended with these words: "Love n kisses, Jack."
Diane''s fingers shook as she read the note. Her heart soared. Diane was thrilled. Love and kisses-- it meant a lot for a lady who had waited so long for those words. She was ecstatic.
The day arrived, Diane waited anxiously for Jack. She had slipped into her best dress and did her best to look as pretty as she could. She looked around but Jack was nowhere in sight. She waited and waited, wondering what she would say to Jack when he got there, what their meeting would be like. Would there be love in his eyes? Would there be longing bred from years of separation and hiding each others'' feelings?
How she longed to throw her arms around him and tell him she was a fool to ever let him go without ever telling him how she felt. She was certain Jack felt it too. There was always a certain magic about them when they were together.
Then, a lady in a sexy tight approached her. She had a very concerned look on her face, "Hi! I''m Lyn, a friend of Jack. Are you Diane?" she asked. Diane just nodded her head. "I''m afraid I... I have bad news for you... Jack is not coming. He won''t be coming back anymore," said the lady, placing a hand on Diane''s shoulder.
Diane shook her head in confusion. She felt her heart constrict. What could possibly have happened? Diane felt an overwhelming fear inside her. Her hands turned cold.
Her voice shook as she asked: "Where? Where''s Jack? What happened to him? Please tell me..."
The lady looked intently at Diane and then she gave Diane a nudge on the shoulder and said, "Hoy gaga, it''s me, Jack... Jaquilyn!!!
Don''t you recognize me, honey? How do I looked, Am I pretty now?"
Joke - Can You Relate
We''re getting older!!!
According to today''s regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60''s, 70''s and early 80''s probably shouldn''t have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly colored lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans. When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just thongs and fluorescent ''spokey dokey''s'' on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same. We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing. We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded. We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, and no Internet chat rooms.
We had friends we went outside and found them. We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt. We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones but there were no law suits. We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents. We played knock-and-run and were actually afraid of the owners catching us.
We walked to friend''s homes. We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; wedidn''t rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner. We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law.
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And you''re one of them.
Congratulations! Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good. For those of you who aren''t old enough thought you might like to read about us.
However the following my friends, is surprisingly frightening......and it might also put a smile on your face: The majority of students in universities today were born in 1983........They are called the youth. They have never heard of "We are the World, We are the Children", and the Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel. They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena or Belinda Carlisle. For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam. AIDS has existed since they were born. CD''s have existed since they were born.
Michael Jackson has always been white. To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can''t imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance. They believe that Charlie''s Angels and Mission Impossible are films from l ast year. They can never imagine life before computers. They''ll never have pretended to be the A Team, the Red Hand Gang or the Famous Five.
They can''t believe black and white television ever existed and don''t even know how to switch on a TV without a remote control. And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone.
Now let''s check if we''re getting old...
1. You understand what was written above and you smile.
2. You need to sleep more, usually until the afternoon, after a night out.
3. Your friends are getting married/already married or in some cases your children are getting married.
4. You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably with computers.
5. When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head.
6. You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good old days, repeating again all the funny things you have experienced together.
7. Having read this mail, you are thinking of forwarding it to some other friends because you think they will like it too...
Yes, we''re getting older!!!! ---------------------------------

of memory and can slow the loading time of
your system. Removing it will improve
performance.
1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok
How To Remove Font For Speed XP
Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite
a bit of system resources. For optimal
performance, trim your fonts down to just
those that you need to use on a daily basis
and fonts that applications may require.
1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Fonts folder
3. Move fonts you don't need to a temporary directory (e.g.
C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case
you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you
uninstall, the more
system resources you will gain.
How To Turn Off System Restore XP
System Restore can be a useful if your computer
is having problems, however storing all the
restore points can literally take up Gigabytes
of space on your hard drive. To turn off System
Restore:
Open Control Panel
Click on Performance and Maintenance
Click on System
Click on the System Restore tab
Tick 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'
Click 'Ok'
How To Disable System Sound XP
Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer
makes for various system sounds can slow
it down, particularly at startup and shut-down.
To fix this turn off the system sounds:
Open Control Panel
Click Sounds and Audio Devices
Check Place volume icon in taskbar
Click Sounds Tab
Choose "No Sounds" for the Sound Scheme
Click "No"
Click "Apply"
Click "OK"
How To Make Menus Load Faster XP
This is one of my favourite tweaks as it
makes a huge difference to how fast your
machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does
is remove the slight delay between clicking
on a menu and XP displaying the menu.
Go to Start then Run
Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'
Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\"
Select "MenuShowDelay"
Right click and select "Modify'
Reduce the number to around "100"
This is the delay time before a menu is opened.
You can set it to "0" but it can make windows
really hard to use as menus will open if you just
look at them - well move your mouse over them
anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150
depending on my mood
How To Improve shutdown speed XP
This tweak reduces the time XP waits before
automatically closing any running programs
when you give it the command to shutdown.
Go to Start then select Run
Type 'Regedit' and click ok
Find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\
Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
Now select 'HungAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
Now find 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop
Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
Now find 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Select 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout'
Right click and select 'Modify'
Change the value to '1000'
Click 'OK'
How To Ensure that XP is using DMA mode
XP enables DMA for Hard-Drives and CD-Roms
by default on most ATA or ATAPI (IDE) devices.
However, sometimes computers switch to PIO mode
which is slower for data transfer - a typical
reason is because of a virus. To ensure that
your machine is using DMA:
1. Open 'Device Manager'
2. Double-click 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers'
3. Right-click 'Primary Channel' and select 'Properties' and then
'Advanced Settings'
4. In the 'Current Transfer Mode' drop-down box, select 'DMA if
Available' if the current setting is 'PIO Only'
How To Disable prefetch on low memory systems XP
Prefetch is designed to speed up program
launching by preloading programs into memory -
not a good idea is memory is in short supply,
as it can make programs hang.
To disable prefetch:
1. Click 'Start' then 'Run'
2. Type in 'Regedit' then click 'Ok'
3. Navigate to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\'
4. Right-click on "EnablePrefetcher" and set the value to '0'
5. Reboot.
How To Create A Shutdown Or Reboot Icon XP
Windows XP has a program called SHUTDOWN.EXE
which allows you to easily create icons to
shutdown or restart your computer.
To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:
1. Right click on an open area of the desktop
2. Select New / Shortcut
3. Enter in "shutdown -s -t 00" - no quotes
4. Press the Next button
For the name, enter in anything you like.
I just use shutdown. Click on the Finish button.
5. For a reboot, enter "shutdown -r -t 00"
Shutdown [{-l|-s|-r|-a}] [-f] [-m [\\ComputerName]]
[-t xx] [-c "message"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy]
Parameters
-l - Logs off the current user, this is also
the defualt. -m
ComputerName takes precedence.
-s - Shuts down the local computer.
-r - Reboots after shutdown.
-a - Aborts shutdown. Ignores other parameters,
except -l and
ComputerName. You can only use -a during the
time-out period.
-f - Forces running applications to close.
-m [\\ComputerName] - Specifies the computer
that you want to shut down.
-t xx - Sets the timer for system shutdown in
xx seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
-c "message" - Specifies a message to be
displayed in the Message area of the System
Shutdown window. You can use a maximum of 127
characters. You must enclose the message in
quotation marks.
How To Have A better disk cleanup Windows XP
This tip will show you how to create an unattended disk cleanup which will also empty your prefetch folder. This tip assumes you have Windows XP installed in c:\windows.
Step 1.
Create a new text file and place the following contents inside:
c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sageset: 1
c:
cd \
cd c:\windows\prefetch
del *.* /q
Step 2.
Save the file, changing the extension from .txt to .bat
For this tip's purpose, we will call it clean.bat
Step 3.
Execute the file. This will run the Disk Cleanup program in a special mode which asks what items you will want cleaned when Disk Cleanup performs an unattended cleanup. Check the items you wish to have cleaned up, then click OK.
Step 4.
Right-click on the clean.bat file and click edit. Change the first line to read:
c:\windows\system32\cleanmgr.exe /dc /sagerun: 1
Step 5.
Save the file. You can execute this file in place of running Disk Cleanup, or, to have this program run unattended, run the Add Scheduled Task Wizard in the Control Panel and create a scheduled task using the clean.bat file you just created.
Note: This cleanup script will also clear windows prefetch directory. Often this directory can become cluttered with old appication and a cleaning would free up disk space but it will result in a one time performance decrease and windows has to rebuild the cache with active software afterwards.

How To Increase Bandwidth by 20% Windows XP
For some reasons by default upon installation
of your Windows XP Win 2000 Microsoft reserves
20% of your available bandwidth for their own
purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating
your PC, etc.
Well you can have the option to override the
default setting "Break the Rules" , If u
change it to 0 then the 20 % incrase in your
bandwidth.
Click Start then Run and type "gpedit.msc"
without quotes. This opens the group policy
editor, then go to:
1.Local Computer Policy
2.Computer Configuration
3.Administrative Templates
4.Network
5.QOS Packet Scheduler
6.Limit Reservable Bandwidth.
7.Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth.
It will say it is not configured, but the truth
is under the 'Explain' tab i.e. "By default, the
Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent
of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use
this setting to override the default." So the trick
is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to
ZERO "0". This will allow the system to reserve
nothing, rather than the default 20%
(It works on Win 2000 as well.)
How To Back Up Windows XP Registry
Here are three options:
* Click on START - RUN and type: Regedit (press ENTER). On the menu bar click on file, then export, choose where you want to save it, then enter a name for it in the box titled: File Name. At bottom put a tick in "All", then click on save. If you ever want to restore the saved version, just IMPORT it.
* System Restore (it should save a copy daily, but you can always create a restore point manually.
* The best method, in my opinion, is to download and run ERUNT. It's the best registry backup utility available - and it's free!!!
How to protect your PC from Spyware/Malware
What is spy-ware?
Spy-ware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Ad-ware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don't have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee.
Known spywares
There are thousands out there, new ones are added to the list everyday. But here are a few:
Alexa, Aureate/Radiate, BargainBuddy, ClickTillUWin, Conducent Timesink, Cydoor, Comet Cursor, eZula/KaZaa Toptext, Flashpoint/Flashtrack, Flyswat, Gator, GoHip, Hotbar, ISTbar, Lions Pride Enterprises/Blazing Logic/Trek Blue, Lop (C2Media), Mattel Brodcast, Morpheus, NewDotNet, Realplayer, Songspy, Xupiter, Web3000, WebHancer, Windows Messenger Service.

Health - Natural Cough Remedies
The following natural cough remedies have been tried and proven. I am very particular about using natural products, all the more when it comes to medication as one never knows the side effects they give. Don't get me wrong. I am not against any modern day medicine but I would rather go natural wherever I can.
I gave the following natural home remedy to my children whenever they develop a cough and it has always been effective. An adult friend of mine who has been coughing for months tried it and got better. Hence, I am putting this down for anyone who prefers a natural solution.
It is so simple you may not believe it. Here goes :
Natural cough remedy I
1 teaspoon of honey
1 tablespoon of lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
Stir mixture in a little bit of drinking water and drink immediately.
Take this 2-3 times a day.
Natural cough remedy II
Freshly squeezed lemon juice ( 1/2 a lemon )
Mix with a little bit of drinking water and drink immediately.
You can take this as many times as you want.

Health - Cold remedies: What works, what doesn't, what can't hurt
It's a given that there's no cure for the common cold. But what about remedies that claim to make you feel better faster? You may be surprised at what does and doesn't pass the effectiveness test.
Cold remedies are almost as common as the common cold, and many are nearly as ancient. The use of chicken soup as a congestion cure dates back centuries. But is longevity any guarantee that a cold remedy works? Does an effective cold remedy even exist? Here's a look at some common cold remedies, as well as the best ways to ward off illness in the first place.
Cold remedies: What works
If you catch a cold, you can expect to be sick for about a week. But that doesn't mean you have to be miserable. These remedies may help:
Water and other fluids. You can't flush a cold out of your system, but drinking plenty of liquids can help. Water, juice, clear broth or warm lemon water with honey helps loosen congestion and prevents dehydration. Avoid alcohol, coffee and caffeinated sodas, which make dehydration worse.
Salt water. A saltwater gargle — 1/2 teaspoon salt in an 8-ounce glass of warm water — can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat.
Saline nasal sprays. Over-the-counter saline nasal sprays combat stuffiness and congestion. Unlike nasal decongestants, saline sprays don't lead to a rebound effect — a worsening of symptoms when the medication is discontinued — and most are safe and nonirritating, even for children.
Chicken soup. Generations of parents have spooned chicken soup into their sick children. Now scientists have put chicken soup to the test, discovering that it does seem to help relieve cold and flu symptoms in two ways. First, it acts as an anti-inflammatory by inhibiting the movement of neutrophils — immune system cells that participate in the body's inflammatory response. Second, it temporarily speeds up the movement of mucus through the nose, helping relieve congestion and limiting the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nose lining. Researchers at the University of Nebraska compared homemade chicken soup with canned versions and found that many, though not all, canned chicken soups worked just as well as soups made from scratch.
Over-the-counter cold medications. Nonprescription decongestants and pain relievers offer some symptom relief, but they won't prevent a cold or shorten its duration, and most have some side effects. If used for more than a few days, they can actually make symptoms worse. Keep in mind that acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) can cause serious liver damage or liver failure if taken in high doses. It's common for people to take Tylenol in addition to flu medications that also contain acetaminophen, which can lead to drug overdoses. Read the labels of any cold medication carefully to make sure you're not overdosing.
Humidity. Cold viruses thrive in dry conditions — another reason why colds are more common in winter. Parched air also dries the mucous membranes, causing a stuffy nose and scratchy throat. A humidifier can add moisture to your home, but it can also add mold, fungi and bacteria if not cleaned properly. Change the water in your humidifier daily, and clean the unit at least once every three days.
MORE ON THIS TOPIC
Dry air: Combating the effects of dry winter air
Humidifiers: Vital steps for cleaning
Cold remedies: What doesn't work
The list of ineffective cold remedies is long. A few of the more common ones that don't work include:
Antibiotics. These destroy bacteria, but they're no help against cold viruses. Avoid asking your doctor for antibiotics for a cold or using old antibiotics you have on hand. You won't get well any faster, and inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to the serious and growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Antihistamines. Although antihistamines can help the runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing that occur with allergies, they have the opposite effect on cold symptoms, further drying nasal membranes and impeding the flow of mucus.
Over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrups. In winter, nonprescription cough syrups practically fly off the drugstore shelves. But the American College of Chest Physicians strongly discourages the use of these medications because they're not effective at treating the underlying cause of cough due to colds. Some contain ingredients that may alleviate coughing, but the amounts are too small to do much good and may actually be harmful for children. In fact, the college has strongly recommended against using OTC cough syrups or cold medicines for any child younger than 14. Coughs associated with a cold usually last less than three weeks; if a cough lingers longer than that, see your doctor. In the meantime, try soothing your throat with warm lemon water and honey and humidifying the air in your house. Avoid giving honey to infants.
Not eating. Despite the old adage "Starve a cold, feed a fever," there's no evidence that avoiding food shortens a cold's duration or reduces symptoms.
Cold remedies: What probably can't hurt
In spite of ongoing studies, the scientific jury is still out on popular cold remedies such as vitamin C, echinacea and zinc. Here's an update on some common alternative remedies:
Vitamin C. Vitamin C doesn't appear to prevent colds in most people, but taking large doses — up to 5,000 milligrams — at the beginning of a cold may reduce the severity of symptoms. Lower doses — 200 to 300 milligrams — may shorten a cold's duration. Just what constitutes an optimum dose isn't clear, but amounts in excess of 2,000 milligrams a day may cause nausea and diarrhea.
Echinacea. A National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine study released in 2005 found that echinacea did little to prevent or shorten colds. But testing herbs is difficult, and scientists say more research is necessary. Some people swear by Airborne, an herbal cold remedy that's sold over the counter in many drugstores.
Zinc. The cold-fighting reputation of zinc has had its ups and downs. That's because many zinc studies — both those that find the mineral beneficial and those that do not — are flawed. In studies with positive results, zinc seemed most effective taken as a lozenge or nasal spray within 24 hours of the onset of symptoms. Taking zinc with food reduced side effects, including a bad taste and nausea.
How colds happen and what you can do about it
Most colds are caused by rhinoviruses, which spread through the air when someone with an infection coughs or sneezes. You can inhale the viruses, but you're more likely to get sick if you touch your eyes, nose or mouth after handling a contaminated object. Telephones, computer keyboards and doorknobs are especially notorious for harboring germs.
Generally, the more you're exposed to cold viruses, the greater your chance of infection; prevailing wisdom has it that colds are prevalent in winter not because it's cold outside — although some new research is challenging this assumption — but because it's so crowded inside. People tend to spend more time indoors during winter and therefore are more likely to share their germs.
But colds aren't inevitable. Scrubbing your hands for at least 15 seconds with ordinary soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer destroys most viruses, which can linger on surfaces for up to 48 hours. And although hand washing remains your best defense against illness, common-sense suggestions such as these also can help:
Use a paper towel rather than a cloth one to dry your hands.
Avoid people who are sick whenever possible, and stay home if you're sick yourself.
Avoid sharing dishes, towels or silverware.
Regularly clean your desk, phone and computer keyboard — at home and at the office — with sanitizing wipes.
Make a serious effort to manage stress, which lowers immunity and may make you more susceptible to illness.
Boost your natural immunity with regular exercise and a healthy diet.

Health - 5 Tips To Keep Memory Sharp
Feeling like the absent-minded professor lately? Here are some memory-improving strategies to keep your brain sharp.
Ginkgo to Think
Ginkgo, the oldest surviving species of tree, has been traced back 300 million years and is one of the most widely studied plants. The leaf of the ginkgo tree is shaped like a human brain, and some believe this is why, in Asia, it has always had a reputation of benefiting the mental processes.
A dwindling memory and decreased concentration is largely caused by decreased blood flow to the brain and loss of brain cells; ginkgo has been confirmed to boost circulation to the brain and other organs, improving memory and cognitive functions. Additionally, ginkgo is used far and wide as a longevity tonic in Asia and Europe.
The best-known and most commonly available form of ginkgo is as teas and herbal extracts, but ginkgo nut, used in the culinary traditions of Asian cultures, also has therapeutic properties and is also said to strengthen lung function.
Mental Gymnastics Keep Your Mind Nimble
It is normal to become more absent-minded as we age, and in fact, most people over the age of 40 experience some memory loss. The most likely causes of a forgetful memory include poor concentration due to brain-chemical imbalance, tiredness, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
If you find you are more forgetful than usual, try these steps and see if there isn't some improvement in your cognitive clarity:
1. Get an uninterrupted eight hours of sleep each night.
2. Do a half an hour of cardiovascular exercise every day, such as brisk walking, slow jogging, biking, or swimming. This will improve circulation and increase blood flow to the brain.
3.Turn yourself upside down for a couple of minutes daily.
4. Mental fitness activities are imperative to prevent age-related cognitive decline. Read and learn new things, find new hobbies, do crossword puzzles, add up your bill in your head while shopping, memorize a set of phone numbers forward and backwards; all these can stimulate brain cell activities and in some cases even grow new brain pathways.
5. Work with your physician to find a supplemental regimen that helps improve your cognitive capabilities. Memory-enhancing supplements and herbs include B-complex vitamins, magnesium, CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, fish oil, flax seed oil, Chinese club moss, ginkgo, and ginseng. A supplement that has been well-documented in Europe for reversing age-related dementia and memory loss is phosphatidylserine (PS), a compound made by the body from the amino acid serine. Taken in supplement form, PS lowers stress response and promotes the release of neurotransmitters in the brain that facilitate thought, reasoning, and concentration.

Health - Top 10 Biggest Brain Damaging Habits
1. No Breakfast
People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration.
2. Overeating
It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power.
3. Smoking
It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer disease.
4. High Sugar consumption
Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development.
5. Air Pollution
The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency.
6. Sleep Deprivation
Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells.
7. Head covered while sleeping
Sleeping with the head covered, increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects.
8. Working your brain during illness
Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain.
9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts
Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage.
10. Talking Rarely
Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain
Health - Don't Eat Too Much Rice
The human body was never meant to consume rice! You see, our genes have hardly changed in more than 30,000 years. However, our food choices and lifestyle have changed dramatically. The caveman would hardly recognize our food or way of life.
Caveman food was never cooked as fire was not yet tamed. Thus, he ate only those foods that you can eat without treatment with or by fire. He ate fruits, vegetables, fish (sushi anyone?), eggs, nuts and meat. Yes, even meat. You can even eat meat raw if you were starving in the forest. You have the necessary enzymes to digest meat.
However, rice, like wheat and corn, cannot be eaten raw. It must be cooked. Even if you were starving in the desert, you cannot eat rice in the raw form. This is because we do not have the system of enzymes to break rice down. You were never meant to eat rice. To make matters worse, you not only eat rice, but also make it the bulk of your food.
In some parts of Asia, rice forms up to 85% of the plate. Even if you take rice, keep it to a minimum. Remember, it is only for your tongue - not your body. Actually, rice and other grains like wheat and corn are actually worse than sugar. There are many reasons:
Rice becomes sugar - lots of it. This is a fact that no nutritionist can deny: rice is chemically no different from sugar. One bowl of cooked rice is the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. This does not matter whether it is white, brown or herbal rice. Brown rice is richer in fibre, some B vitamins and minerals but it is still the caloric equal of 10 teaspoons of sugar. To get the same 10 teaspoons of sugar, you need to consume lots of kangkong - 10 bowls of it.
Rice is digested to become sugar. Rice cannot be digested before it is thoroughly cooked. However, when thoroughly cooked, it becomes sugar and spikes circulating blood sugar within half an hour - almost as quickly as it would if you took a sugar candy. Rice is very low in the "rainbow of anti-oxidants"
This complete anti-oxidant rainbow is necessary for the effective and safe utilisation of sugar. Fruits come with a sugar called fructose. However, they are not empty calories as the fruit is packed with a whole host of other nutrients that help its proper assimilation and digestion.
Rice has no fibre. The fibre of the kangkong fills you up long before your blood sugar spikes. This is because the fibre bulks and fills up your stomach. Since white rice has no fibre, you end up eating lots of "calorie dense" food before you get filled up. Brown rice has more fibre but still the same amount of sugar.
Rice is tasteless - Sugar is sweet. There is only so much that you can eat at one sitting. How many teaspoons of sugar can you eat before you feel like throwing up? Could you imagine eating 10 teaspoons of
sugar in one seating?
Rice is always the main part of the meal - While sugar may fill your dessert or sweeten your coffee, it will never be the main part of any meal. You could eat maybe two to three teaspoons of sugar at one meal.
However, you could easily eat the equal value of two to three bowls (20 - 30 teaspoons) of sugar in one meal. I am always amused when I see someone eat sometimes five bowls of rice (equals 50 teaspoons of sugar) and then asks for tea tarik kurang manis!
There is no real "built in" mechanism for us to prevent overeating of rice. How much kangkong can you eat? How much fried chicken can you eat? How much steamed fish can you eat? Think about that! In one seating, you cannot take lots of chicken, fish or cucumber, but you can take lots of rice. Eating rice causes you to eat more salt.
As rice is tasteless, you tend to consume more salt - another villain when it comes to high blood pressure. You tend to take more curry that has salt to help flavor rice. We also tend to consume more ketchup and
soy sauce which are also rich in salt.
Eating rice causes you to drink less water. The more rice you eat, the less water you will drink as there is no mechanism to prevent the overeating of rice. Rice, wheat and corn come hidden in our daily food. As rice is tasteless, it tends to end up in other foods that substitute rice like rice flour, noodles and bread. Technology - What Is Blue In Bluetooth Technology
Bluetooth isn’t actually blue. It’s a wireless technology named after a Danish Viking King, Harald Bluetooth, who united Denmark and part of Norway into a single kingdom.
Where does this cord go?
The annoying thing about electronics is that you’re always tripping over a cable. You have to connect the computer to a printer, internet, speakers, your USB stick, camera, video camera, and the occasional external hard drive. And anyone who’s had to install a home entertainment unit can testify to the frustration of all those bewildering coloured connections.
Bluetooth is a technology that allows our electrical devices to ‘talk’ to each other without wires or cables. You probably already use wireless technology. The remote control for your television uses infrared to change channels or play DVDs. But infrared is problematic because it is easily blocked by solid objects and can’t talk to more than one device at a time, which is why you have to have several remotes for TV, video, DVD and sound system.
Surfing radio waves
Bluetooth uses radio frequency. As you know by listening to AM/FM radio, radio waves can penetrate walls and transmit to millions of radios at once. Bluetooth uses signals of around one milliwatt (3000 times weaker than a mobile phone) so the signal won’t interfere with other electronics. Bluetooth is designed to link devices that are close to each other, like you would find in a house or an office.
The first advantage to Bluetooth, besides the lack of cables, is that it’s cheap. The second is that it’s really simple to use. You don’t have to activate or turn on Bluetooth devices, they automatically find one another. Then, they talk to each other to find out if they have information to share, like a personal organiser and a hard drive. Or they find out if one device should control the other, like a computer and a printer. This conversation only has to take place once, then a network is set up that works without you having to press a single button.
There are over 1000 companies that produce Bluetooth technology. So the next time you trip over a cable, cheer up. You won’t need it for much longer.
